Well, its our third morning and its another lovely sunny day again. Yesterday was apparently the best day Habuka has had all season in terms of sunshine. And now its 3 clear days in a row. This is, so i'm told, incredibly rare. And i should enjoy the sun while it lasts. Everybody else is. 'Its a perfect day' they all say. 'Just lovely' my dad implores. Amazing views etc etc etc, but all I'm hearing is 'excuses excuses excuses.
This place is meant to bucket down everyday, and did so for the two weeks prior to our arrival. There is a lot of snow around the place, but there hasn't been any new snow yet, which means the snow on the ski trails begins to get firm and hard from all the use. And skiing on fresh snow is what i really came for. And i looked at the weather forecast for the next week. Surprise surprise, more sunshine and less than 5cm of new snow over the next week. 'That's really bizarre' my lodge host explains. 'It's so unusual to see so much sunshine. It normally snows every day.' Yep. Normally. I've heard this all before. The same thing happened to me in Whistler. No new snow seems to follow me around on many of my ski trips. Maybe God has it in for me?
No efficiency, no accountability. It's a lousy way to run a universe.
Now i bet you're all thinking 'what a cry baby, get over yourself, you're on a great overseas ski holiday for pete's sake. And yes, i'm telling myself that, and i am really enjoying myself. Yesterday we visited a resort called Habuka 47, which was really lovely, very modern, with some great views. The snow was lovely and soft early on but firmed up as the day went on. A day for carving up the groomed trails and blasting down with speed listening to Sufjan Stevens and other tunes. Had plenty of fun skiing with my lodge host, Andy, and some of the other guests at the lodge.
Here are a few lovely photo's of the view from the top of Hakuba 47. With one of dad and me with cool beanie hair.
Off to another resort today, so better start getting my stuff together.
